Bondi to Coogee Coastal Walk from North Bondi

That approach is part of the pleasure. The bay opens gradually as the promenade leads south; then the architecture gives way to sandstone, sea pools, coves and a succession of distinct beaches. This is not one unbroken postcard but a walk whose character changes at every headland.

Allow half a day if you want photographs, coffee, a supervised swim or lunch. The route includes many stairs and exposed sections, and the return should be planned before tired legs reach Coogee.

The route

From North Bondi, follow the promenade south past Bondi Pavilion and the sea wall. The coastal route begins near Bondi Icebergs and continues around Mackenzies Point to Tamarama, Bronte, Clovelly and Coogee.

The track is graded as suitable for most ages and fitness levels, but it includes stairs and occasional steep sections. It is not a flat boardwalk and is not entirely step-free.

How long should you allow?

Allow half a day if you want to enjoy it rather than simply complete it. Two to three hours covers steady walking on the official six-kilometre section. Add time for:

• The North Bondi-to-Icebergs approach
• Photographs at Mackenzies Point and Marks Park
• Coffee or breakfast in Bronte
• A swim at a patrolled beach or ocean pool
• Lunch in Coogee

During Sculpture by the Sea, the Bondi-to-Tamarama section takes considerably longer because of art viewing and crowds.

Best time to walk

Start early in warm weather. The track is exposed and shade is limited on headlands. Spring mornings and mild winter days are comfortable; summer midday heat can turn a beautiful walk into a tiring one.

Bring water, sun protection and shoes that cope with stairs. Check the forecast and coastal conditions, particularly after heavy rain or damaging surf.

Swimming on the route

Only swim between the red and yellow flags at a patrolled beach and follow lifeguard instructions. Those flags mark the supervised swimming area; they do not guarantee that the ocean is hazard-free. If there are no red-and-yellow flags, ask a lifeguard and do not enter if unsure.

Read every temporary sign and flag on the day. A solid red flag means the beach is closed to swimming; a yellow flag warns of potentially dangerous conditions; black-and-white quartered flags mark a surfcraft boundary. Keep swimmers outside surfcraft zones. Ocean pools can also close in dangerous conditions or for cleaning.

Children need constant, close adult supervision. Never swim after drinking alcohol, and do not enter the ocean merely because other people are in the water.

Getting back

The walk is one way for most visitors. Plan public transport from Coogee or use a taxi/rideshare. Do not assume the whole group will want to repeat the route in reverse. Use the Transport for NSW Trip Planner on the day for the current connection.

Add an interactive or illustrated route map with these public anchors in order:

• Bondi Icebergs / official southern Bondi start.
• Mackenzies Point and Tamarama.
• Bronte Beach.
• Clovelly.
• Coogee Beach.

Label the official route as 6km one way and allow two to three hours before long stops. Add buttons for “Open the walking route” and “Plan the return trip”. The return button should open a current Transport for NSW journey search rather than promise a direct bus.
