Bondi in spring: whales, sculptures and the first warm swims

Spring is the local's season in Bondi. The crowds of summer haven't arrived, the water is waking up, and the coastline puts on its two best free shows of the year.

Whales, from your morning walk

Humpbacks pass the Bondi headlands from May to November, and spring is when mothers and calves travel south close to shore. The lookouts at Ben Buckler and Marks Park cost nothing; bring coffee from the north end and patience.

Sculpture by the Sea

From late October the Bondi to Tamarama stretch of the coastal walk becomes the world's largest free outdoor sculpture exhibition. Go early on a weekday morning or in the last hour of light; weekends in the middle of the day are a slow shuffle.

Back in the water

The ocean pools at North Bondi and the Icebergs reopen scrubbed and glassy after winter maintenance. Wally Weekes and the wading pool at the north end are the gentle options; laps and a sauna at Icebergs are the institution.

Eat outside again

Long lunches return to North Bondi Fish and the RSL balcony, Saturday farmers markets fill Bondi Beach Public School, and Sunday's market turns over vintage and local designers. Book the special-occasion places ahead; spring weekends fill fast.
